During this week’s Family Devotional Guide, we will focus on the canticle (or song) of Simeon in Luke 2:29-32.
DAY 1
Scripture: Luke 2:26, 29
Discussion: While we often think of the whole nation of Israel awaiting the Messiah, this passage in Luke’s gospel puts a face on that waiting by showing us one individual who had longed for the Messiah (and had been promised that he would see him before he died). How do we see Simeon’s faith on display? How would you have responded? What does Simeon’s trust in the Lord teach us about how we should likewise trust in the Lord?
Song: “’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” by Louisa M.R. Stead & William J. Kirkpatrick
DAY 2
Scripture: Luke 2:30
Discussion: Discuss the significance of the fact that Simeon said that seeing Jesus incarnate means that he had literally seen “your salvation.” What does this statement tell us of Jesus’ identity and mission as well as the purpose of His incarnation and earthly ministry?
Song: “Jesus Saves” by David Moffitt & Travis Cottrell
DAY 3
Scripture: Luke 2:31-32
Discussion: What do these verses tell us of the scope of the gospel as well as God’s love? Why was it important that Jesus’ salvation was “prepared in the presence of all peoples”? How is the gospel and Jesus’ redemptive work a “light for revelation to the Gentiles” and “for glory to…Israel”?
Song: “Mighty to Save” by Ben Fielding & Reuben Morgan
