INTRO

  • Mark 4 has focused on Jesus teaching about the Kingdom of God. Now Mark shifts from Jesus’ authority in teaching to His authority over creation.

  • As the disciples cross the Sea of Galilee, a violent storm arises. What begins as a difficult situation quickly becomes a divine revelation. The storm exposes the disciples’ fear and lack of faith, while Jesus reveals His power and identity.

  • The central question of the passage is: “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (v. 41)

  • The answer is clear: Jesus is Lord over every storm and worthy of our trust.

1. The Storm Tested Their Faith (vv. 35-38).

“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

  • Jesus led them into the storm.

  • The disciples faced circumstances beyond their control.

  • Fear caused them to question Christ’s care.

Truths

  • Following Jesus does not exempt us from trials.

  • Difficult circumstances are not evidence that God has abandoned us.

  • When life becomes overwhelming, run to Christ rather than away from Him.

  • Faith is often developed in the storms we would never choose.

2.  The Savior Revealed His Authority (v. 39).

“Peace! Be still!”

  • Jesus rebuked the wind.

  • Jesus calmed the sea.

  • Creation obeyed its Creator.

Truths

  • Jesus is not merely present in the storm; He is Lord over the storm.

  • Nothing in your life is outside His authority.

  • The same Savior who rules the sea rules your circumstances.

  • Our confidence is not in our ability to handle the storm but in Christ’s ability to rule over it.

3. The Storm Exposed Their Need (vv. 40-41)

“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

  • Jesus confronted their fear.

  • Jesus called them to faith.

  • Jesus revealed more of His identity.

Truths

  • Trials often reveal what we truly believe about Jesus.

  • The greatest need in every storm is not a change of circumstances but a deeper knowledge of Christ.

  • Faith grows as we learn who Jesus is.

  • Every storm is an opportunity to trust Him more and worship Him more.

The What Now?

  • Trust God’s presence even when you cannot see His purpose.

  • Remember that Jesus is greater than the storm you are facing.

  • Let every trial drive you to a deeper faith and a greater view of Christ.

The miracle is not simply that Jesus calmed the storm. The greater lesson is that the disciples discovered who was in the boat with them. The more clearly we see Jesus, the more confidently we can trust Him in the storms of life.
