Family Devotional Guide - 1/17/21

Updated: Jan 21, 2021

Day 1

  • Scripture: James 5:13-18

  • Discussion: This passage in James reminds us that prayer is powerful and effective. In v. 15, it is the “prayer of faith” that “will save the sick.” James reminds us that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails man” (v. 16). What does this verse tell us about the importance fervency and holiness? What does it mean to pray “effective” prayers? Finally, consider the example of Elijah. Look in the Old Testament and discuss the glimpses into his prayer life that we find there.

  • Song: “Sweet Hour of Prayer” by William B. Bradbury & William W. Walford

Day 2

  • Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:1-7

  • Discussion: Spend some time studying 2 Timothy 2:1. What are the differences between supplication, prayer and intercession? How might you flesh out those different types of prayer in your own life? Also, spend some time praying especially for those in authority (v. 2), as well as lost people around us that God desires to save (v. 4).

  • Song: “I Need Thee Every Hour” by Annie Sherwood Hawks & Robert Lowry

Day 3

  • Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:8-18

  • Discussion: Consider the fervent praying of Hannah. What lessons can we learn from her prayer life? How would you describe the praying of Hannah in this passage of Scripture? Spend some time in fervent prayer to the Lord for your own needs and the needs of those around you.

  • Song: “Nearer, My God, to Thee” by Lowell Mason & Sarah F. Adams
