This week’s Family Devotional Guide is based on our Scripture reading from Sunday, Matthew 22:23-33, and other passages related to the subject of the resurrection of the dead.
Day 1
Scripture: Matthew 22:23-33
Discussion: After answering the Pharisees who were trying to trap Jesus about paying taxes to Caesar, the Sadducees took their turn in trying to trap Jesus about the resurrection. They turn a question about a widow who had been married multiple times into a question a trap Jesus about who the rightful husband would be in heaven. How does Jesus respond? What truths about resurrected life in heaven do we learn from Jesus?

Day 2
Scripture: John 11:17-27
Discussion: Right before He performs one of His most amazing miracles during His earthly ministry (raising Lazarus from the dead), Jesus has a conversation with Martha about death and resurrection. What does Jesus teach about the subject of resurrection? How did Martha misunderstand Him at first in verse 24? What does Jesus indicate by saying that He is the resurrection and life (and not just that He resurrects and gives life)?

Day 3
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Discussion: The apostle Paul gives us one of the most detailed teachings about what happens to followers of Jesus Christ at the Second Coming. What hope do we have in this passage (compared to unbelievers who “have no hope” in v. 13)? What phrase does Paul use to describe believers who have died (see the end of verses 14-15)? Why is his exact word usage so important? Discuss all the reasons we have to be encouraged from these verses.
