Pray That You May Not Enter into Temptation (Luke 22:39-46) - 3/2/25

INTRO

  • Jesus leaves the upper room

  • The battle is intensifying

  • PRAY. PRAY, PRAY

The Situation at Hand – vv. 39-40

Pray so that you will not fall into temptation

Pray

  • Communion with God.

  • Stay close to the Father

  • Watch yourselves Stay awake. 21:34-36 (physically, Spiritually)

Temptation

  • Satan wants to sift as wheat– vv. 31-32

  • Generally, trial of one’s character (1 Peter 4:12, “to try [or prove] you”). By implication, trial of one’s virtue, temptation, solicitation to sin, especially from Satan[1]

The battle intensified the closer they got to the cross

  • For us. The battle is over truth. The heart of the Gospel

  • Closer to the truth. The battle rages (FRONT LINES)

  • Away from the truth. None

Jesus’ Victory – vv. 41-45

His position

  • He withdrew

  • As usual. Knew what awaited Him

  • The importance. The dependence. The devotion.

His request

  • Jesus as man. His Humanity

  • Representative, Substitution, Example, Mediator (Grudem)

  • The physical, emotional, spiritual agony that awaited.

  • Take this cup Matthew 20:22 Mark 10:38

  • Suffering and Death

His trust

  • God’s Will to be done

  • Prayed more earnestly (Kept praying)

The Disciples’ Failure – v. 46


Jesus returns and they are sleeping

The battle intensified

  • Their position

  • Their Request

  • Their Trust

  • Doubt, Wilted

Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak

Repent and STAND

  • Overcome, learn from, get going

  • Remember, Jesus told Peter WHEN he turned again v. 32

  • THEIR LIFE AS DISCIPLES FOR CHRIST… WORLD CHANGERS!!!!!
