Family Devotional Guide - 10/23/22

In this week’s Family Devotional Guide, we’ll focus on our Scripture reading from Sunday, Psalm 146

Day 1

  • Scripture: Psalm 146:1-4

  • Discussion: The psalmist opens this psalm by commanding us to “praise the Lord” and then declares his commitment to continue praising the Lord. He switches gears in verses 3-4 by focusing on not trusting in earthly leaders. What is the connection between praising the Lord and not trusting in earthly leaders? Would you say that praise necessarily implies trust? In other words, when we praise the Lord, does that also include implicit trust in the Lord as well?

  • Song: “Great Are You, Lord” by David Leonard, Jason Ingram & Leslie Jordan

Day 2

  • Scripture: Psalm 146:5-7

  • Discussion: Since we are not to trust in earthly leaders, the psalmist makes it clear who we are to trust (i.e. “the God of Jacob…the LORD”). Discuss all the things the Lord has done (v. 6) and still does (v. 7). Explain how the gracious acts of God in history and our lives assist us in praising Him.

  • Song: “Your Great Name” by Krissy Nordhoff & Michael Neale

Day 3

  • Scripture: Psalm 146:8-10

  • Discussion: The psalmist finishes the psalm by listing more wonderful things the Lord does. Spend some time walking through the Scriptures and find examples of the Lord doing the things mentioned in verses 8-9. What actions do we see Jesus performing in the gospels? Finally, spend some time praising the Lord and thanking Him for His rule and reign over us (v. 10).

  • Song: “Mighty to Save” by Ben Fielding & Reuben Morgan
