This week’s Family Devotional Guide is based on our Scripture reading from Sunday, John 6:1-15.
DAY 1:
Scripture: John 6:1-4
Discussion: This passage begins by focusing on Jesus traveling across the Sea of Galilee. Why do you think Jesus decided to travel at this point? What does verse 2 tell us about Jesus’ possible motive for the change of scenery, and what does it tell us about the motive of the people following Him? Discuss who His primary audience was in verse 4. Finally, why do you think it was important for John to mention that the Passover was just around the corner? How does the rest of this chapter connect to the Passover as well as the Lord’s Supper?

DAY 2:
Scripture: John 6:5-9
Discussion: Why do you think Jesus decided to test Philip at this point (vv. 5-6)? Philip responds by focusing on how feeding that crowd of people would be very expensive. Do you think your response would have been similar to Philip’s? Why or why not? Why do you think Peter spoke up to mention the boy with the barley loaves and fish?

DAY 3:
Scripture: John 6:10-15
Discussion: In these verses, we come to the miracle itself, which included a total of 5,000 men, meaning that the grand total of the crowd (including women and children) was at least double that total! Spend a moment discussing the largest gathering (church service, concert, sporting event, etc.) and how amazing it would have been to feed that many people with 5 loaves and 2 fish. In this miracle, why is it important to note that everyone “had eaten their fill” and that there were even “leftover fragments,” enough to fill twelve baskets? This miracle obviously caused the people to call Jesus “the Prophet who is to come into the world,” signifying their belief that Jesus was truly the Messiah. What Old Testament miracle has a parallel with Jesus’ miracle here? Why did Jesus decide to get away from the crowd after performing this miracle?
