Introduction

  • Jesus remains in predominantly Gentile territory.

  • The crowd has been with Him for three days and has nothing to eat.

  • This is the second feeding miracle recorded in Mark.

  • The disciples have already witnessed Jesus feed more than five thousand people.

  • Jesus again reveals His compassion and divine power.

The Compassion of Jesus – vv. 1–3

Jesus sees the condition of the crowd and is moved with compassion for them.

The Crowd’s Need (v. 1)

  • A great crowd has gathered.

  • They have nothing to eat.

  • Jesus calls His disciples.

Jesus’ Compassion (v. 2)

  • The crowd has remained for three days.

  • Their food is gone.

  • Jesus says, “I have compassion on the crowd.”

Jesus’ Concern (v. 3)

  • Some have traveled a great distance.

  • Jesus knows they may faint on the way home.

Because Jesus knows our needs and cares for us, we can trust His compassionate care and show that same compassion to others.

The Provision of Jesus – vv. 4–7

The disciples see what they lack, but Jesus demonstrates His ability to provide.

The Disciples’ Question (v. 4)

  • They focus on the size of the need.

  • They question how the crowd can be fed.

The Seven Loaves (v. 5)

  • Jesus asks what they have.

  • The disciples have seven loaves.

Jesus Provides (vv. 6–7)

  • Jesus gives thanks and breaks the bread.

  • The disciples distribute it.

  • Jesus also blesses and provides the fish.

Because Jesus is able to provide what we cannot, we can remember His faithfulness, place what we have in His hands, and trust Him with the results.

The Sufficiency of Jesus – vv. 8–10

Jesus provides more than enough… the entire crowd eats and is satisfied.

The Crowd Is Satisfied (v. 8)

  • Everyone eats.

  • Everyone is satisfied.

The Provision Is Abundant (v. 8)

  • Seven baskets of leftovers remain.

  • Jesus provides more than enough.

The Crowd Is Sent Away (vv. 9–10)

  • About four thousand are fed.

  • Jesus sends them home.

  • He departs with His disciples.

Because Jesus is completely sufficient and His grace is abundant, we can trust Him for what we need and find our ultimate satisfaction in Him.

The What Now

  • Trust the compassionate heart of Jesus.

  • Remember His past faithfulness.

  • Place what you have in His hands.

  • Show His compassion to others.

  • Find your ultimate satisfaction in Christ.
