The Rejection of the Son (Luke 20:9-18) - 10/13/24

Tabernacle Baptist Church

INTRO

  • Parable of the wicked tenants

  • They have previously rejected His authority and now He share a parable to confirm it

  • Very clear message… would have been perfectly understood

  • Past – Present – Future picture of God’s relationship with His people. (Israel/Church)

    • Death of the Son and His vindication

  • Acknowledge the Owner… receive His Son.

The Setting

  • Jesus goes on the offensive.

  • He turns to conversation directly to those in opposition

  • His authority is in question

  • WHO IS HE? WHO SENT HIM?

  • The same questions are being asked today.

The Characters and their Responsibility

Vineyard

  • Isaiah 5:1-7 The people of God. Israel.

  • The people of God. God’s redemptive purpose.

  • Here, the nation of Israel and it awaits their Messiah.

Tenants

  • Care for the vineyard. Desire is faithfulness and fruitfulness.

  • Should be awaiting. Anticipating the coming Messiah…yet did not

  • Not theirs. Give a percentage to the owner

  • Responsibility and Accountability

  • The religious leaders over the people.

  • Became greedy. Thought much of self.

  • PRIDE AND PROSPERITY (IDOLS OF THE HEART)

Servants

  • Sent by the owner.

  • Declare what was the truth (the arraignment… what was right and true)

  • Rejected and abused.

  • Picture of the OT prophets send by God to those in position of authority.

  • John the Baptist. The Disciples.

  • Listen, Turn Back, Follow After, OBEY GOD.

Son

  • Surely, they will listen to the son.

  • The rightful heir of the vineyard

  • Representing the Father and what is His.

  • Sent by, empowered by the Father

  • Rejected and murdered.

  • Get rid of the son, then the land will be ours.

The Meaning and the Fulfillment

The religious leaders were entrusted to nurture and strengthen God’s people.

  • Owner is taking what is His

  • God is the creator. It is His. He has the right.

Lost man has always rejected the ways of God. Throughout redemptive history, their reaction has demonstrated the emptiness and ineffectiveness of man’s religion.. (adding to or taking away from God’s truth)

The Son came to fulfill the will of the Father

That what was rejected has now become the cornerstone.

The world says… surely not… yet, it has and will come to be.

  • He could not. He would not.

Receive Him

  • John 3:36

  • To reject the Son is to Reject the Father

  • I believe in God, but I am not trusting in the Gospel (THE SON)

  • 1 Peter 2:4-10
