NOTES FROM WORSHIP CHOIR MEETING
AUGUST 13, 2025 - 7:30 PM

1. GENERAL NOTES
1. Faithfulness
-
We must be committed and faithful.
2. Excellence
-
Faithfulness to rehearsals is closely tied in with excellence. Let’s work hard and offer the Lord something that costs something of us (Cf. 2 Samuel 24:24).
-
Rhon Carter (Worship & Music Catalyst for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board):
-
“Most people are not against style, they’re against unpreparedness.”
-
In other words, let’s do what we do well and with preparation, no matter the style.
-
So, no phoning-it-in!
3. Communication
-
Let me know of absences. (During the meeting, the group decided on text as the best form of communication. I may also add a simple form on the choir page that members can fill out to let me know of absences due to trips, sickness, etc.)

4. Growth
-
Recruiters – According to Rhon, choir members are the greatest recruiters!
Singing with excellence and joy will attract (the opposite is also true).

5. Community
-
Choir is one of the best organizations to foster and maintain community in the local church (much like Sunday School classes and small groups). We are a family, in more ways than one!

6. God-Focused
-
We sing for an audience of One.

7. Congregationally-Driven
-
One of our primary purposes is to enhance congregational singing. (The group decided lyrics on the back wall are enough to assist in singing the songs, but if a need should arise for sheet music on any song, let me know).

8. Unsaved-Aware
-
Rhon Carter: “What does the guy visiting the first time think?” (esp. an unbeliever)

9. Prayerfulness
-
Ask the Lord to invigorate our worship (and start with us—the choir)!

2. CHANGES

1. Piano/Stage (past)
-
Piano was turned to face sideways to better communicate with the choir and the congregation equally. Choral arranger Cliff Duren utilizes that arrangement and for that reason.
-
The risers will eventually be separated out to move the choir to a better spot to enhance visibility and audibility.
2. Difficulty (past)
-
We will utilize easier music to help us be better prepared and sound our best.

3. Frequency (present)
-
Last Sunday of the month will be Choir Sunday! Just be here.
-
My hope is that we strengthen in numbers and vitality to the point where we open the schedule up to more frequent singing!
4. Quota (present)
-
We need 10 people, ideally. According to Rhon, it’s just a fact that with fewer folks, a choir will lack energy.
-
Unfortunately, it’s a reality that choirs are at a disadvantage. We are the only ministry that requires a quota to function.
5. Kids (present)
-
Grades 3 and up will now be permitted to sing with us on a regular basis (with the exception of musicals, etc.). They will sing with us when our prepared piece is the 5th Sunday intergenerational choir selection.
6. Roles (present)
-
Prayer Coordinator—If you are open to this role, let me know.
-
Secretary—Mary Robertson asked if she could write cards for birthdays, sickness/absences, etc. So, I asked if she would also be happy to take attendance and serve as our secretary, and she happily agreed to serve.
-
Choir president?—We may discuss this role later, as needed.
7. Rehearsals (present)
-
We will incorporate an excerpt from a book that we’ll read together in rehearsal.
Current book: Sing! By Keith & Kristyn Getty -
Each choir member will receive a copy of this book!
8. Parts for Congregational Songs (present)
-
We will learn parts for one congregational song each service. This will enhance our sense of purpose as well as the music overall.
-
We may also sing choral pieces as congregational songs (such as “Behold Our God” or “Days of Elijah”).
9. Heart Songs/Familiarity (present)
-
We’ll focus especially on congregational songs that connect with our congregation.
Typically, I have waited 2-3 months between singing a certain song. That means that, in most circumstances, the most we’ll sing a song is 4 times a year. However, we will increase the frequency for songs that our congregation seems to really enjoy singing.
10. Growth (future)
-
I would love to hit 20 on the choir roster with a consistent 15+ in the loft.
11. New Songs (future)
-
We’ll probably stick to learning only about 3 songs a year as a congregation (which is about what we normally do). According to Rhon, it takes 17 times for the average churchgoer to learn a song and sing it without having to really think about the words and music. Basically, it’s not natural until you’ve sung it almost 20 times!
3. INPUT
1. Top 5 List
-
Give me your top 5 favorite worship songs/hymns. (I gave out slips to fill out, so if you were not at the meeting, please see me to get your slip to fill out and return.)
2. Favorite Choral Piece
-
Write your favorite choir piece on the back of the Top 5 list.
4. CHALLENGE & SUMMARY
1. Be recruiting.
2. Be faithful.
3. Be prayerful.
4. Be hopeful.
5. Be examples.
6. Be engaged.
7. Be “all in.”
Challenge: “Let the choir members lead out and decide whether we continue” (Rhon).
Let’s prove that the Worship Choir is a vital, viable ministry of TBC!
5. SEASON OF PRAYER
We ended our meeting in a season of prayer. Terry Roberson & Ronnie Griffin prayed, and then I closed us out.
