INTRO

  • In chapter 3, Peter reminds them—and us—that Jesus is coming again. Not as a humble servant this time, but as the righteous Judge and sovereign King. And when He comes, the heavens will roar, the earth will burn, and every heart will be laid bare. But in the midst of this terrifying vision, we find glorious hope: the same God who will judge the world is the One who is patient toward us, not wishing that any of His people should perish, but that all should come to repentance. • How can we live and trust HIM as we await His return?

Cling to the Word – vv. 1–2

Brothers

  • Fellow believers and followers of Christ

Sincere minds

  • Unlike the false teachers. Minds and hearts set on the Lord.

Remember the Word/Truth

  • Holy prophets (perfect tense). Commandments of Christ through the Apostles

  • Unchanging truth.

We CLING to the Word in the midst of uncertain times.

Expect and Overcome Opposition – vv. 3–4

Know this first of all

  • Very important. Realize. Expect. Overcome.

Scoffers will come in the last days

  • Mocking the Gospel. Who He is. Who sent Him. How that impacts us. How we live.

  • Last days. The time between His two comings.

  • Following their own sinful desires.

Where is the promise of His coming?

  • They naturally will not believe in a second coming of Christ. Because they have yet to embrace HIS COMING.

THE MOCKING IS AGAINST GOD AND HIS TRUTH… NOT US. STAY ON TASK.

Trust in God’s Plan – vv. 5–9

They overlook v. 5&8

  • The forget what God created with the Word. And later judged by water..

  • The World today will ultimately be judged… by fire.

  • HIS PERFECT TIMING. 1000 years. Psalm 10:4

The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise v. 9

Not wishing for any to perish, but all should reach repentance v. 9

  • Hermeneutics is key. TOWARD YOU.

  • The context is 2 Peter 1:1. Those that are saved. The redeemed in Christ.

  • ANY is not all humanity. But those that are in Christ. He is writing and addressing believers.

  • Pay attention to the flow of the verse.

  • He is not slow to fulfill His promises

  • He is patient toward you

  • Not wishing that any should perish

  • But all should reach repentance

GOD HAS AND ALWAYS WILL WORK ACCORDING TO HIS PERFECT PLAN. WE CAN TRUST HIM.

Anticipate Christ’s Return –  v. 10

Day of the Lord

  • His second coming.

  • Judgment on the unrighteous

  • Ultimate salvation for the righteous

Like a thief

  • Suddenly. Unexpected

  • Our attitude. Urgent. Watchful.

Heavens pass away

  • Physical universe as we KNOW. New heaven and earth awaits.

Works exposed

  • All things are brought to light by the Gospel.

LIVE LIKE HIS RETURN IS IMMINENT. WE NEED TO CHECK OUR HEART AND LONG TO SEE OTHERS COME TO FAITH IN CHRIST.
