Jesus as Prophet, Priest, and King

INTRO

• God established three offices in Israel: prophet, priest, and king.

• Held by different people, these three offices featured three different types of work.

• The Old Testament projected the coming of One who would be Prophet, Priest, and King, uniting the three offices.

• The Son of God fulfills this Old Testament expectation.

• As Prophet, he reveals God and his ways.

• As Priest, he mediates between God and his people.

• As King, he rules over creation, including humanity. [1]
  

Prophet

• Spoke God’s Word

• Proclaiming truth

• Revealing God’s plans

• Matthew 21:11 – And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

• Jesus spoke the Word.

• ‌Mark 1:22 – And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
  

Priest

• Served as mediators between God and Man

• Offered sacrifices

• 1 Timothy 2:5 – For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

• Hebrews 4:14–16 – Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a – high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
  

King

• King David

• ‌2 Samuel 7:16 – And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.

• ‌Gabriel and Mary

• His authority and rule

• Matthew 28:18–20

• Return one day as King

• 1 Corinthians 15:24–28 – Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.
